Pride Youth Theater Alliance Receives Arcus Foundation Grant to Broaden Social Justice Impact
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – JUNE 2016
PRIDE YOUTH THEATER ALLIANCE
RECEIVES ARCUS FOUNDATION GRANT
TO BROADEN SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT
BOSTON, MA – The Pride Youth Theater Alliance (PYTA) has been awarded a generous grant from The Arcus Foundation to support the 2016 Queer Youth Theater Conference. With this significant and historic award, PYTA is positioned to support more artists, educators, and activists to attend its signature professional development and movement-building event, and serve all participants by planning more robust programming that aligns with our shared values: youth voice, queerness, community, artistic expression, and liberation.
The goal of The Arcus Foundation’s Social Justice program is to ensure that individuals and families around the world of every sexual orientation and gender identity are able to live their lives with dignity and respect, and express their love and sense of self. Queer Youth Theater offers queer and allied youth safe spaces to creatively express themselves while providing unique methods for representing and empower queer voices in their community. PYTA, a growing network that advances the practice of Queer Youth Theater, is proud to receive support from the Arcus Foundation in order to elevate the work of so many leaders across the U.S. and Canada.
Programming for the 2016 Queer Youth Theater Conference, held in Memphis, Tennessee at Playhouse On The Square, August 18-21, will include member-driven workshops on theater arts, activism, and community organizing, youth-generated performances, and networking events. With the support of the Arcus Foundation, more scholarships will be offered to cover travel and registration costs for leaders in the field who would otherwise not be able to attend.
Additionally, a daylong anti-racism institute and field trip to the National Civil Rights Museum will be planned for all conference participants. Noted as one of the nation’s premier heritage and cultural museums, the National Civil Rights Museum is steadfast in its mission to share the culture and lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement and explore how this significant era continues to shape equality and freedom globally. This opportunity will grow the number of culturally competent leaders in the Queer Youth Theater Field, and empower conference participants to connect their regional efforts for LGBTQ equality to the national social justice and anti-oppression movements.
PYTA was formed to unite Queer Youth Theater directors, whose programs were developed as isolated responses to local pressures or interests. Today, this thriving alliance promotes successful models of Queer Youth Theater programming through financial support, pedagogical resources, and advocacy for artists, activists, youth, and educators. Current PYTA member organizations are located in 20 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
