Member Spotlight: Shirley Li (Somerville, MA)

Shirley Li is one of PYTA's individual members! She's involved in tons of projects, from her LGBTQIA+ - focused A Cappella group, Kinsey Scales, to starting a GSA counseling group for students in 6th - 8th grade. Here's a little taste of what Shirley's been up to recently in her own words:

Kinsey Scales

"This past June, I was elected as a co-music director of Boston's premiere queer-focused A cappella group, Kinsey Scales. We don't have any concerts open to public yet, but I will let you all know when we do perform! A few songs in our repertoire include Ghost - Ella Henderson, Wings - Little Mix, Shake it Out - Florence and the Machine, Quiet (a capella version) - Milck, Make Me Feel - Janelle Monae, and more! I just auditioned for one of the solo features in Quiet and was selected! I'm very excited to perform these songs and serve as a co-music director."

GSAs in Boston Public Schools

"I received a grant this past summer to work within the Boston Public School systems to provide resources and partner with GSAs (Gender Sexuality Alliance clubs) at three different schools that are trying to get their clubs up and running. I'm excited to get started on this project very soon and to also help plan to LGBTQ+ Summit that BPS hosts in the spring."

The Challenge

"I have been struggling with balancing my workload as a full time student and part-time intern at my school to pursue licensure and my Certificate of Advanced Studies in school guidance counseling. While trying to balance being a student, I'm also volunteering with different organizations on and off campus. It's pretty difficult to find a work-life balance and staying stress-free!"

Keep an eye out to hear more from Shirley as these projects grow!
